Switzerland Accelerates China FTA Upgrade Amid U.S. Trade Strains
Switzerland is pivoting eastward to strengthen economic ties with China as trade relations with the U.S. deteriorate. The Swiss government announced plans to expedite negotiations to modernize its 2014 free trade agreement with Beijing following a strategic dialogue between Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis and China's Wang Yi.
The original pact, China's first with a continental European nation, has fueled significant growth in bilateral trade. Switzerland exports high-tech goods, pharmaceuticals, and luxury items to China while importing electronics and industrial components. Both nations aim to make trade more predictable and sustainable through the upgraded agreement.
This strategic shift comes as Switzerland grapples with 39% U.S. tariffs imposed in August, which have disproportionately impacted its advanced manufacturing and pharmaceutical sectors. The Alpine nation appears to be hedging against Western trade volatility by deepening Asian partnerships.
